GearWERKZ After-Action: Saturday, 04 Feb 2017 Edition
What's up, folks. Nothing big here. GearWERKZ After-Action will just be a post where I periodically roll up the past week's gaming activity over on my gaming channel on YouTube, Rounding Off Infinity. Ya know. For those of you who have been too busy to check-in over there. It's no problem. I gotcha covered.
In this week's entry, there are five entries in My Gaming Diary. Games covered include:
- Halo Wars 2 Blitz Beta (PC)
- Destiny (PS4)
- Last week's Edition of Take-On News
- Wolfenstein: the New Order (PS4)
- Gears of War 4 (XB1)
Feel free to take a look around, take anything you like. Leave the rest for others. And let me know if there is anything else you'd like to see on the channel aggregated here. Happy hunting.
You can check out my takeaways from my time in the demo here.
Dear Diary: this is a recording of my last set of strikes before I competed the single-player campaign. I now stand at the precipice. Unsure as to whether I now pursue all of the DLC that has been released since the launch of this title. Or if this means I will consider Destiny completed and never play it again. Much thanks to the Ninjas who showed up to assist me as FireTeam members during this strike. It was a blast. If I'm never online on Destiny ever again, so long, and thanks for all the fish.
Here is the next episode of GearWERKZ Take-On News, my randomly scheduled news show where I present three of the major news stories that have come across my feed and then give my personal take on the pulp. This afternoon, it's a games edition, and I am talking the game development community's response to the Trump immigration policy, Phil Spencer's desires for more cross-play titles for XB1 and PC, and Francis Ford Coppola's plans for an Apocalypse Now Video Game. Plus, I run down the latest posts over on my personal blog. Enjoy and please feel free to provide any feedback you might have. This is a new schtick and very much still a work in progress.
Dear Diary: after several days of hitting new games and demos primarily for the purpose of posting content to the site, it's nice to simply settle back into my backlog. I've knocked out the single-player campaign on Destiny (finally), and I believe that I am close in Gears of War 4. I've had Wolfenstein in my inventory since the game released, and have yet to touch it.
Playing through this tonight, I realize that I am still programmed much by my experiences in Return to Castle Wolfenstein (2001, Activision). In that game, jumpscares abounded, as the focus was mainly on teh Third Reich's crazy experiments and efforts to create the ubermensch via sourcing the occult. So I stepped slowly and lightly through the New Order tonight, although I could feel that the games design language was really to incentivize you to run and gun (why else would you let someone dual-wield assault rifles?!)
Dear Diary: I've been playing this game on PC since I purchased it last October or whenever it released. Over there, I had been trying to play it mostly with keyboard and mouse. And while that mode did provide some good old fashioned PC nostalgia, I have to admit that with the specific mechanics of GoW, it plays better on a controller. The dynamics of the roadie run, and how melee plays out, especially for executions, it's just more nimble on that controller.
Regardless, I'm not tired of this campaign yet. And when I really dedicate myself to focusing on the gameplay, I also open up a deep interest in how the combat vignettes play out in different spaces. it's very nuanced how you need to shift combat tactics depending on the spatial arrangement of that particular level. I know I'm getting close to the end, and I worry that I will miss this game. I have very fond memories of the first title. It has taken me this long to get back. I am hoping that I remember to focus on the details in these last few hours. Who knows if Microsoft is planning on revisiting this franchise again.
